Welcome to the DSA section of this online resource. Please take a moment to familiarise yourself with this programme, and don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Programme team for any queries.
Programme Intent
Our Data Scientist Apprenticeship (DSA) has been developed by the University of Hertfordshire in partnership with leading employers and subject experts to meet growing global demand for data science talent and prepare apprentices for successful careers as data scientists. Apprentices will develop the skills and expertise to interrogate data, systems and approaches to unlock insights, improve organisational processes and inform decision making.
Implementation
The course will consist of flexible learning, including a mix of lectures, tutorials, group work, and directed independent study, with learning applied directly into the workplace.
Impact
The DSA programme equips apprentices with the skills and expertise to effectively manage and analyse large datasets, and leverage machine learning and AI, within your organisations. The programme empowers apprentices to bridge the gap between theory and practice, enabling them to contribute effectively to your organisation’s data-driven decision-making processes and drive meaningful business outcomes.

Preparing for EPA
End-point assessment (EPA) is the final stage of an apprenticeship. It is an independent assessment of whether the apprentice has developed the knowledge, skills and behaviours outlined in the Apprenticeship Standard and Assessment Plan.
All apprentices are required to meet the Gateway requirements as identified in the Assessment Plan before they can undertake their EPA. This Gateway check is a formal documented process and provides a check point for the employer and apprentice. The employer is required to confirm and sign that the apprentice has met the KSB’s of the standard and any other requirements (e.g. Level 2 Maths and English) and is ready for the EPA. The University will identify these requirements on the Gateway form for the employer.
An Independent Assessor will be sourced by the university and involved in the assessment of all three aspects of the EPA (knowledge test, report, and professional discussion). Following the completion of the three EPA assessments, the Independent Assessor will make the final judgement and grading. All integrated EPAs are also externally quality assured by the Office for Students. As part of the quality assurance arrangements, employer feedback on the EPA process will be collected. For more information on the University’s commitment to EPAs, see our Structure and Assessment Regulations Policy: Appendix IV: Apprenticeship Provision – End Point Assessment and Appendix V: Apprenticeship Provision – Fair Access Policy for End Point Assessment.
