Programme Intent

To develop a person-centred nursing associate who can deliver high-quality, evidence-based nursing care that meets the mental, physical, and psychosocial needs of a range of people, across the lifespan, and in a variety of settings. We intend to enable learners who may not have previously met the entry requirements for the profession, to have a clear and accessible career pathway into nursing.

The collaboration between the University and our local healthcare providers within the NHS, private, voluntary, and independent sectors enables us to create a work-based programme with the intention of developing and increasing the nursing workforce.

Implementation

Once on programme, we have devised an ambitious curriculum, appropriately relevant to local and regional employment within the healthcare sector. All components of the curricula are taught by staff with expert knowledge in their fields and the structure of the programme encourages growth and development in both academic and practical skills. it builds new knowledge, increases skill acquisition, and develops professional behaviours. development in both academic and practical skills. It builds new knowledge, increases skill acquisition, and develops professional behaviours. The programme incorporates a range of assessment methods from written assignments to professional discussions, posters, group presentations and OSCEs. Different teaching strategies from online sessions to simulation, lectures and seminars to group work and debates are incorporated in the delivery to ensure that differing learning styles are met. These different teaching methods enable learners to develop healthy working relationships with peers and colleagues.

Learners will experience a range of placements in a range of healthcare settings. Learners are fully supported in placement. Before placements learners are briefed on expectations and informed of all support mechanisms. In each placement every apprentice has several support staff they can approach from practice assessors to Trust based practice education facilitators.

Staff support learners with additional needs. They are aware of any study needs agreements, actively check learners’ progress in class and adapt teaching sessions and resources to meet individual requirements.

Impact

We have high expectations of all our learners, and this is evident in their attitude to learning, their grades and their positive behaviours and conduct displayed in both placement and their work environment. Attendance is high, and we have on average a 95% attendance record. We have high percentage pass rates across all three categories with on average 40% of the cohort obtaining a distinct. We currently have 100% of timely completions.
