Speech and Language Therapist – BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy

Welcome to the Speech and Language Therapy section of this online resource. Please take a moment to familiarise yourself with this programme, and don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Programme team for any queries.

Programme Intent

To prepare learners for a future career as a Speech and Language Therapist. This involves developing reflective practitioners with the requisite knowledge, skills and professional attributes and behaviours consistent with those expected of newly qualified graduates and that meet the Degree Apprentice standard.

Implementation

Apprentices will study academic modules ‘off the job’ usually with an attendance of one day a week in the University. This will predominantly be in person with some synchronous online attendance with any additional time allocated to direct an independent study. In addition, apprentices will be learning ‘on the job’ as well as undertaking further study in their own time. Six-week placements will be undertaken in each of the three levels of study. These placements provide a range of experiences in different settings and sectors enabling a broad understanding of the value and contribution of Speech and Language Therapy as well as achievement of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) Pre-registration Eating, Drinking and Swallowing (EDS) competencies by the end of the programme.

Impact

Curious and confident Speech and Language Therapy graduates emerge, prepared to be autonomous practitioners, who are digitally agile with strong interpersonal, leadership and collaborative skills and who can provide compassionate, inclusive, evidence-based, person-centred care across the lifespan of the service user.

The EPA starts with the examination board and finishes when the University confirms a pass on all modules and sends the apprentices’ details to have Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). The apprentice separately applies for registration once they have received their results.

The Apprentice must have completed and achieved the following gateway requirements prior to beginning the EPA:

  • Achieved all required modules from: BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Achieved English and Maths qualifications in line with the apprenticeship funding rules (this is an entry requirement for the University).
  • The apprentice will also have successfully completed all the practice requirements required by the RCSLT including the EDS competencies.
