Welcome to the Diagnostic radiography section of this online resource. Please take a moment to familiarise yourself with this programme, and don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Programme team for any queries.
Programme Intent
To prepare each learner for a future career as a diagnostic radiographer. This involves developing reflective practitioners with the requisite knowledge, skills and professional attributes and behaviours consistent with those expected of newly qualified graduates and that meet the Degree Apprentice standard.
Implementation
Apprentices will attend off the job learning online 1 day a week during academic periods with an additional 3-4 days of master classes at the university. Here they will have access to our imaging suite for bespoke clinical skills training focusing on key areas of practice and personal skills development. Each semester apprentices will be required to complete 115 hours of clinical placement gaining competency in a range of clinical areas across their imaging department and will have a 6-week period at the end of each semester in which to complete this.
Apprentices will additionally receive protected study time to undertake either directed or self-directed study towards meeting the learning outcomes of the programmes as part of their off the job hours allocation.
Impact
The programme affords learners the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies to apply for registration as diagnostic radiographers with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC and to become members for the Society and College of Radiographers (ScoR). The programme aligns to all required benchmarks and standards including those related to the degree apprenticeship (ST0619).

Preparing for EPA
Progression towards the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for the End Point Assessment is discussed at each tripartite progress review meeting.
We pride ourselves on providing professional-specific employer liaison tutors. This means a radiography academic will be working with your imaging department and workplace mentor who understands the working environment and challenges that may present.
The University of Hertfordshire has an established team of academics providing training to clinical radiographers who will be supporting and supervising your apprentices during clinical placement. This supports the delivery of high-quality learning of clinical skills and providing effective feedback to apprentices in the clinical environment.
In addition, we will provide assessor training for the radiographers you identify to carry out clinical placement-based assessments enabling them to provide apprentices with an authentic and fair assessment experience.
The EPA is undertaken when the employer and the University are satisfied that the apprentice is consistently working at or above the level set out in the occupational standard and the apprentice has achieved 360 credits of the BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography. The EPA starts with the examination board and finishes when the University confirms a pass on all modules and sends the apprentices’ details to HCPC. The apprentice separately applies for registration once they have achieved a pass on all modules and the university sends the apprentices’ details to HCPC. the apprentice separately applies for registration once they have achieved a pass.
