Programme Intent

This programme aims to support learners’ transformation as senior leaders in healthcare. With an emphasis on application, reflexivity and co-production, programme learning cultivates the adaptive mindset critical to enhancing leadership and management practice.  A blended and flexible learning journey supports learners to contextualise understanding; drawing on peers, practitioners and academics to deliver a personalised learning experience, with learning applied directly into the healthcare workplace.

Implementation

The Anderson Senior Leader apprenticeship programme provides participants with a personalised learning journey as they progress through the NHS Leadership Academy’s online modules, whilst simultaneously engaging in experiential on-campus workshops and action learning days at University of Hertfordshire. This blended delivery brings together flexible online curricula with a face-to-face learning community and dedicated support for work-based learning through which learners can cultivate the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to be successful leaders in the NHS. In progressing to the MSc award learners design, deliver and evaluate a strategic level business project whilst cultivating the applied research skills required to succeed in a dynamic operating environment.

Impact

Responsive and responsible senior healthcare leaders emerge, equipped to mindfully and critically navigate complex and dynamic clinical and non-clinical environments and generating positive impact for their organisations and society.

Preparing for EPA

Assessment of knowledge, skills and behaviours and duties is conducted through a holistic End-Point Assessment (EPA). The outcome of the EPA determines whether the apprentice is competent to undertake the identified occupation.

It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure the apprentice meets the Gateway requirements  to enable them to progress to the EPA. It is important that the apprentice has had adequate opportunity to practise the form of assessments required for the EPA.

Maths and English achieved at Level 2 MUST be achieved prior to undertaking EPA.

CMI (Chartered Management Institute) will conduct the EPA

The responsibility for arranging the EPA lies with the University.

The University will continue to support the apprentice until the EPA has been completed. Commitment from the employer to release the apprentice for these activities is required.

To be eligible for the NHS Elizabeth Garrett Anderson award in Senior Leadership, learners will need to progress to (and successfully complete) the top-up Masters award (MSc Healthcare) after passing their EPA. This is not funded by the apprenticeship levy but is an integral part of the full Anderson programme.
